Quite often I use MKVExtract GUI to extract the English subtitles from a video file and multiplex it later in MKVToolNix. At times, when I add the extracted English subtitle file, it shows the language tag anything other than English.
The GUI can derive track languages from file names. You can configure its behavior in the preferences, including turning it off altogether.
