"Timestamp conversion failed" on newer version

Hello everyone and thanks for the great tools!

I have problems with playing certain mkv files and it started a few weeks ago. I first thought it was a decoder or renderer problem. I tested the files with a lot of tools (not just mkvinfo & ffprobe) and played it in various players (of course also VLC).

The problem manifests by freezing the frame & dropping the audio for a second and then playing really fast. This happens every few seconds.

I only post here, because the ONLY difference I could find was that the files in questions are merged with a newer version of mkvmerge (mkvmerge v83.0 ‘Circle Of Friends’ 64-bit) and the videos merged with older version work fine.

I am still not sure what the problem exactly is, but I have ruled out a lot of other possibilities like HD failure, Level incompatibility and others.

I can play videos with much higher bitrate than the problematic ones just fine.

I am grateful for any new ideas/input. I will happily test anything (reasonable  ).

Here is the relevant part of VLCs debug output.

Welcome!

Please post such issues in the bug trackers of the programs showing these errors. We don’t know where they come from, what they mean, under which circumstances they occur, nor do we have the knowledge about those programs’ code in order to debug it properly.

If developers of said players can pinpoint it to something like “this is due to the file contains being wrong at place X and Y”, then that’s something that we can also take a look at. But solely the output of those programs won’t get you far here.

Not really. They occur in ALL programs, i spent > 10h tracking the problem down, and the only difference is the version of mkvmerge.
I made an effort and was hoping to find some guidance and maybe someone knowledgeable about the specific topic.
And mkvinfo doesnt stop throwing errors for these files.
It’s a transient bug for sure and it seems related to older hardware.
If anyone in the future reads this, at least you know you are not alone

If mkvinfo complains about files just created with mkvmerge, this sounds a LOT like hardware issues.
