Subtitles are not being added certain videos

So I’ve been extracting .ass subs files, editing them, and then multiplexing them back into videos.

I set them as default. Make sure their language is set to English. Even name them “English (Sub)” and it’s been working fine for the last 30-or-so videos I’ve been doing it to.

But this time, when I play the video, the subtitles aren’t displaying at all. Even when I deselect the subtitle track and reselect it. Nothing. It’s like they don’t exist. The original subtitle track works fine and displays the subs. Those are the one I extracted and edited.

I thought maybe I screwed up and changed something in the subtitle file that messed with it. Like deleting a line of code or something.

So I re-extracted the working English subs, and then immediately remultiplexed those ones back into the video. But even those subs don’t show up. The subs that were already in the video can still be turned on. just not any subs I put in the video myself. Even if they’re literally the ones I’ve just extracted.

It’s the same with three other videos. These four videos won’t show any subs I try to put in. But I can still edit and multiplex other videos just fine and the subs show up on them. It’s just those four specific videos.

I have no idea what’s going on.

[Edit]
I tried putting subs from an earlier video that I edited (Subs that worked) into these videos. These subs showed up. So it seems the problem itself lies within the subtitle file.

They’ve obviously formatted these four videos subtitles in a way that makes them not work if I extract them and put them back in. I have no idea how they managed to get them working for themselves though, while also making them stop working if I add them back in.

Welcome!

I agree that there’s something fishy about the subtitle files. Without having access to them I cannot really say what exactly, though. Can you please upload some of the ASS files that don’t work when multiplexing them into Matroska? To my file server, for example. Thanks.

That’s okay. I figured out how to fix the problem. I think the subtitle file itself was corrupted.

So I took a working .ass subtitle file from one of the previous videos I worked on. One that worked. Then I copied everything from the non-working file, and pasted everything into the working one. Saved it. Then multiplexed it. Now the subs show up just fine.

So that .ass file must be broken. The text inside it was fine. I just need to be transferred to a working .ass file.

Glad you were able to figure it out.
