I have some home videos from my wifes iphone 12 and for some reason, they don’t play nicely on various home streaming options. The worst offenders are .mov HEVC videos taken in portrait mode which tend to play in horizontal orientation or crash all together (although they play correctly on a PC using VLC etc). It seems most of the players are ignoring the orientation flag.
Running it through MKVToolNix doesn’t seem to fix the issue. But after running it through MKV, it also plays then in horizontal orientation on my PC. Is there a way to rotate the video 90 degrees in MKVToolNix? I played with the Projection settings but without luck. I read the documentation but it was over my head.
Total newbie here. Just looking for some kind of rotation flag that doesn’t require re-encode. Handbrake works. But i don’t want to re-encode all my home videos due to the time it would take.
Also curious is that when I simply change the extension from .mov to .mpg they play fine (no MKVToolNix needed). Which would be easy enough. But then the behavior is totally unpredictable depending on different player settings. In original quality they play correct, but if the player (plex etc) transcodes, they are upside down and squished.
