I do some recordings that record more that I need, and want to delete the tail. The only solution I have found is using split with the correct duration, limit to two files and then manually delete the second file (the tail). Is there some variation I’ve missed that just doesn’t process the tail?

You can use the “splitting by parts” mode described in the documentation (the fourth point there).
