Hello people
I’d like to ask if there’s proper support for the following library:
https://github.com/fraunhoferhhi/vvenc
I’m asking because when I encode a video using FFmpeg (which already added support for VVC in MKV), the resulting .mkv file plays fine. However, when I try to remux that same file using MKVToolNix, the output seems broken — it freezes or doesn’t play correctly.
So I wanted to know whether MKVToolNix currently has full and correct support for the VVC (H.266) format, or if it’s still in development.
Thank you very much for your time.
Welcome!
At the moment MKVToolNix does not support H.266/VVC. Nor have the Matroska specs been adjusted for it yet. I had started the work on the code quite a while ago, but I quickly lost interest & stopped, to be quite honest. I cannot give you even a guess at when it’ll be done.
This means that however ffmpeg writes VVC to Matroska is not the official way, as there is no official way yet. Meaning any VVC-in-Matroska file you create with ffmpeg now might not be spec compliant once the specs get ironed out.
Ok, thank you for your response. I’m really looking forward to seeing this implemented soon, as the compression advantages are phenomenal compared to everything else. Thanks and best regards."
Just to be totally, 100% clear: it certainly won’t be soon, maybe not even “in the medium term”.
No problem – ffmpeg already has support, and I’m sure they’ll handle it eventually. I was just asking to know and to leave a trace for everyone searching and wondering whether VVC in MKV will ever be supported. Now, whenever someone finds this public post, they’ll know that it doesn’t officially exist yet and shouldn’t expect it anytime soon. There’s no rush – it’s just about making the situation 100% clear, as you said. Thanks for your reply and for all your work – it’s really appreciated.
