Can not merge or extract "auto forced" subtitles

I can not figure out how to include the “auto forced” subtitle of a mkv movie file to the new merged mkv movie file in mkvmerge. I have scoured the internet looking for a solution, but have found none.

Here’s what I’m trying to do:

I want to add a audio commentary track file to a mkv movie file that has a “auto forced” subtitle, but when I do that the “auto forced” subtitle track does not appear in the newly merged mkv movie file.

The auto forced sub track does NOT appear in the subtitle list in mkvmerge or mkvextract (it only shows in the subtitle list from the original mkv file in MPC).

Everything else merged perfectly.
How can I include the auto forced subtitle in the newly merged mkv file?

Welcome!

If a track doesn’t show up in MKVToolNix GUI when you add a file there are a couple of possible reasons:

  1. The format of the subtitles isn’t supported (e.g. closed captions embedded in video tracks).
  2. The subtitles are somewhat malformed & mkvmerge simply doesn’t recognize them.
  3. The file simply doesn’t contain the subtitles in the first place.

Some movie players look for subtitles not only in the file they’re currently playing, but also in similarly named files located in the same directory. For example, when you play a file called My Movie.mkv they might also offer to show subtitles from My Movie.srt if that one exists in the same directory.

Sooo… putting those two things together, maybe there simply is no subtitle track in your source MKV file, but there’s a separate subtitle file?

I think you’re right about the contents of the file not being there. I just re-watched the movie (the original mkv file) and I never saw any subtitles even though I had selected the “auto forced” sub from the list in MPC.

I guess the listing is just a pointer to a fake subtitle like “S: No subtitles”.
I thought it was strange. Thank you very much for taking the time to answer my post. Cheers!

You’re quite welcome.
