Does anyone know what the best method is to backup the metadata from .mkv files?
I already have backups of the content of the video files themselves, but would like to also make a backup of the extra work I put into tagging all of the audio tracks. I’m pretty sure that for chapter names I’m able to just export as .xml. Does something similar exist for other parts of the container structure?

With mkvextract you can get chapters & tags as XML which can be fed into mkvmerge directly (or processed further with anything else). Attachments can also be extracted.
What you cannot get out with mkvextract are segment information & track headers. You can use mkvinfo, though be aware of how it works as well as this situation.
When looking at other tools I suggest starting with MediaInfo which can output in machine-parseable formats.
