I’ve been using MKVToolNix GUI for muxing media files and noticed that it automatically detects the track language from filenames (e.g., subtitle.eng.srt sets the track language to English). This is very helpful!
However, I am looking for a way to have the track name (or title) automatically parsed from the filename as well. For example, I would like a file named audio.commentary.eng.ac3 to set the track name to “commentary” and the language to English.
Currently, it seems like track titles must be manually entered in the GUI after importing files. Is there a way to structure filenames to achieve automatic title parsing? If not, would it be possible to add such a feature in the future?

No, there’s no such option, and I’m not interested in adding one. You can make the process slightly shorter for yourself by using the menu option “Multiplexer” → “Copy first source file’s filename to the title” or its keyboard shortcut, Ctrl+F.

I appreciate the clarification, but I think there was a misunderstanding. I’m not referring to the file title (the title of the MKV itself), but rather to the track titles within the file.
Ah, sorry, I misread. No, there’s no functionality for that either, and no, I don’t really want to spend time in that direction.
Then, the best way to automate that would be using a script that will parse the list of subtitle files and then pass the titles to mkvmerge, right? Thanks.
That’s correct. All the command line tools were designed with automation in mind & can be fully automated with a bit of scripting around them.
